Game 7 - Panthers 3, Chiefs 2
Submitted By bfallowfield on Monday, October 1, 2012
There a definite trend happening with the Minor Bantam Chiefs.  It’s not a terrible thing, of course, but the Chiefs are rarely scoring any first period goals.  I believe we have scored a total of 1 goal in the first period (not including exhibition and tournament games).  On the bright side we have only given up a couple so it’s not like we’re getting blown out early.

On Sunday the Chiefs played in Essex against the tough Sun County Panthers and not surprisingly

they played to a 0-0 first period tie.

Shots were minimal, scoring chances about the same.

Unfortunately, the second period started out like a nightmare.  With a Chief in the box, Sun County opened the scoring early in the second on a rebound of the boards behind the Chief net.  Shortly after, the Panthers took advantage of a 5 on 2 which left no chance for Ashton in the Chief net.  Another Chief penalty led to a third SC goal only a few minutes after that as a seeing-eye shot from the blue line eluded the screened Chief netminder.

Things were looking pretty bleak at this point as the Chiefs had been able to generate little offense despite numerous powerplays of their own.  The momentum did fortunately swing after a time-out call by the EMC coaching staff.  Whatever was said, seemed to work as the Chiefs picked up the tempo, increased the physical play and started to take it to the Panthers.

It’s one thing to “take it to” them, it’s another to actually score on the SC goaltender. No further goals were scored in the second, but that was a small victory as we were definitely not ready to throw in the towel.

The Chiefs dominated the third period and were able to score 2 very nice goals.  The first, which came shortly after Curtis A. was stoned on a short handed breakaway, was a setup from the side of the net to a wide-open Matt P. who made no mistake going “roof” over the goalies right shoulder.  Continuing to apply pressure, D’arcy P. finished off a nice sequence of passing with his linemates by neatly tucking the puck into the net as he came out from behind the goal line.

About 5 minutes remained and the Chiefs continued to press.  Near misses by Curtis and Max R. almost capped the comeback but it was too little, too late as they say and time ran out.  I think another 5 minutes and you would have seen a third Chief goal.

Aside from the 8 minute span to start the second period this was a pretty well played game by the Chiefs.  Unfortunately, those 8 minutes were enough to cost us today.
