Tournament Recap
Game 1 - Markham

It's always a good idea to start off a tournament on the right foot.  That's what we did, although it got a wee bit tense early in the third.

Final score was 4-2 for the good guys.  Period one was dominated - at least in time-of-possession - by the Chiefs.  We had a few excellent opportunities but were not able to score on the Markham goalie.  Defensively, we held them to no more than 1, or 2 shots as the team was playing very well in our own end and on the back check.  We scored early in the second and a short while after to make it 2-0.  S. Bulitka scored both of these goals.  One on a rebound of a point shot, the other on a nice feed from behind the net by D. Winchester.

In the third, a goal by K. Chisholm from in front of the net gave us a seemingly commanding lead.  However, we all saw the Canada/Russia game the other night :)  Low-and behold, the Majors took advantage of one of the few defensive breakdowns by the Chiefs and narrowed the gap to 3-1 with 9 minutes remaining.  Another goal by the Majors with 4 minutes left brought it to 3-2 and you could feel the pressure mounting.  Not wanting to take any chances, coach Facca called a timeout and got things back under control.  A short while after this, R. Root banged in a rebound and the 2 goal lead was restored. This is how it ended and I think we should all be pretty satisfied.

Tough one later tonight against Whitby.

Game 2 - Whitby

The long time between games didn't affect the Chiefs in the least.  The boys played exceptionally well in this game and coasted to a 4-1 victory over the Whitby Wildcats.  The score was 0-0 after 1, but, as in the first game today, the Chiefs broke through with 2 goals in the second period.  Defensemen figured prominently in both of these goals.  B. Bowers scored on a wrist shot from the point on the powerplay as the puck seemed to deflect off a Whitby defender.  Not long after, C. Schyvenaars led a nice rush deep into the Whitby end, tried to tuck one in on the short side of the goaltender, was denied, but D. Winchester was there to clean up and poke it past the netminder.

In the third, the Chiefs continued to press and were rewarded after a scramble when captain K. Chisholm found a rebound and shot it into the yawning cage. (I'm really working the cliche's here!).  Later in the period, S. Bulitka scored a highlight-reel goal to increase the lead to 4-0.  Although the Wildcats scored later - with about 4 minutes remaining - it was pretty obvious that the Chiefs were not going to let this one slip away.

A solid game from start to finish by all players and we are now in the drivers seat to make it to Sunday action.

Early one tomorrow, though, as we play at 9:00.
I'm out!
Game 3 - Central Ontario

It turned out to be a bit of a heartbreaker for the Chiefs as the battled back from a sluggish start only to lose in the final second of the game.

It seems to me that we tend to start slowly on these morning games and today was no exception.  It's not terrible, as in we are not stuck in our end for the entire time, but we just don't seem to be clicking in the first period and a half of this one.  For the first time in the tournament we did not score first as COW took advantage of their first powerplay to take a 1-0 lead after one.

Partway through the second, before we "woke up" completely, the Wolves scored another after applying some pressure deep in our zone.  The boys finally got it going later in the period and a goal by D. Winchester before the end of the period narrowed the gap to one.

Early in the third, the boys tied it up on a goal by D. Panziera. The team seemed to have it turned around but we were unable to score again.  We did get in a bit of penalty trouble and had to kill a couple more penalties.  With only a few seconds remaining the Wolves had one last chance to win it as they came out on a 2-on-1 with just 10 seconds remaining.  They took full advantage of this chance and scored just before the final buzzer rang.

It was a sad way to lose.  On the bright side, we are still in control of our destiny as a win against West Senaca later this afternoon will put us through to the semis.

Game 4 - West Seneca

When does a tie feel like a loss?  When you had to win to move on :(

After tying West Seneca 1-1 the Chiefs are left to wonder "what if?" The boys played a good game. Both goaltenders played very well, and the end result was tie game.  As West Seneca has a better GF Avg, as well as more goals, they will move on with 5 points and we will go home with 5 points.  The Chiefs were up 1-0 late in the third, but the Wings scored after a long scramble in front of the Chief net with just 4 minutes remaining.  Unfortunately, the referees were not our friends as a few penalties which were not called earlier in the game were suddenly called. The Chiefs were even 2 man down for a short period with just 2 minutes remaining.  The penalties were killed, but the Chiefs were unable to score another goal despite pulling their goalie.
